Happy Wednesday, lovelies! We’re right at the end of October, and that means… Halloween! I still have no idea what I’ll be wearing as I get into Halloween fun this weekend, but Alena’s costume is picked out. She’s going to be Katniss Everdeen/Th “Mockingjay” from The Hunger Games. Her costume is really cool… it’s amazing how much my 10 year old has grown up… after years of being characters like Tinkerbell, Belle and Elsa… the last couple of years Alena’s “tween side” has been showing. Last year, Alena was a vampire (appealing to her love of Twilight, she’s a twi-hard fan) and this year, she’s appealing to her love of The Hunger Games.

Speaking of Alena, this past Sunday, we went for brunch at a tasty breakfast spot called Nosh located in the Historic Downtown Geneva, Illinois. Alena and I had a date to discuss “mean girls.” As mentioned, Alena is getting to be a tween and with that comes the typical unkindness and gossip from a handful of unhappy, young people. The focus of our conversation around “mean girls” was about putting out positive energy, and the ability to roll things off your back. Alena is such a sweetheart and I’m confident that she will continue putting out goodhearted vibes.

The outfit featured in this post is the look I wore when we were out to brunch. Playing with some new neutral pieces that were recently added to my fall wardrobe, I was determined to wear my grey leggings (they are oh so soft!) and keep my entire look casual, comfortable and effortlessly stylish. Nailed it? I think so…

Tell me some things… Halloween plans? Thoughts on raising a tween and encountering “mean girls?” How about this light and dark look for fall?

With Style & Love,

Amber

  1. I was just reading an article last night on the mean girl effect…or relational aggression. I love that you had a conversation with her, I definitely hope to do the same with Lucia one day. Raising girls is tough!

  2. Hey there, gorgeous! I love this look, it’s so cute and perfect for grabbing brunch on the weekends! I need to check out those leggings because I’ve yet to find a pair that I love, other than the ones that I wear way too much and need to give a break, which are from VS when they sold clothing…yup, THAT old, lol! I can’t believe how much Alena is growing either. It’s crazy because I feel I know you two after reading your blog for so long, so each time she makes an appearance, I’m like OMG!!! She has a strong mom who loves her so much and who’s always there, so she’ll always be okay. Thanks for sharing, gorgeous, and I hope you’re having the best week so far!

  3. I don’t have kids, but looking back I really appreciate that I learned a a lot from my parents and not from my friends. Sometimes I would get annoyed by some conversations but I’m glad they happened. I think It’s really great you communicating with Alena and that she is learning from you.
Nice outfit btw. You look really comfortable in it. :)

  5. That’s so awesome you’re trying to instill positive thoughts into your daughter regarding a time when so many girls go negative. It seems obvious, but I don’t think a lot of people do that! You also look really chic in this look! I’m going as Murphy Brown for Halloween because I like obscure reference characters, ha. XO

  6. I remember those tween years- they can be so difficult especially when friendships shift and you find that you are making new friends since old friends are now mean or have too much attitude. Always finding the sunny side of things is so critical!

  7. Oh raising a tweenager must be hard! I’m not there yet but being a mum of boys that will come with its own challenges, haha!

I like your casual outfit, perfect for brunch :)

Hope you’re having a good start to the weekend and you pick out a fun costume.

  8. Very cute outfit! Perfect for the lovely weather we’ve been having in Chicago this week!
It’s great that you had a moment to sit down with your daughter and talk about mean girls, I think it’s so powerful for a young girl to hear words of encouragement from her mom =o) You are doing an amazing job at raising her =o)
